The short answer

What to know before you go

Families with small children should check the heights first: the big rides need 48 inches, and a child under 36 inches can take only a few rides, all with an adult.

History

How old the Pleasure Pier is, and what happened there

The first Pleasure Pier was built during World War II as a recreation spot for the military; Wikipedia dates it to 1943. It had rides, an arcade, an aquarium and the Marine Ballroom until Hurricane Carla wrecked it in 1961. From 1965 the Flagship Hotel stood over the water on the same pier, until Hurricane Ike in September 2008. The hotel was torn down afterwards.

Landry's took its plans for an amusement pier to the city in 2009 and started rebuilding in 2011. Today's Pleasure Pier opened in May 2012. Wikipedia gives its length as 1,130 feet. Two blocks away, at 23rd Street, Galveston's first amusement park, Electric Park, opened in 1906.

On May 28, 2026, the Iron Shark stopped on its 100-foot lift hill with eight riders on board, students on a school trip. The Galveston Fire Department brought them down with a ladder truck, and nobody was hurt. Landry's said the ride stopped as designed after a malfunction and would be inspected before it reopened. If the Iron Shark is the ride you came for, ask at the booth whether it's running.
