How to choose

Four things to check before you book

Shuttle or walk

Without a shuttle you still have to get to the ship and back to your car. From some lots you can walk: the port's lots next to each terminal, Park 2 Cruise (across from Terminals 10 and 16), and Park N Cruise and VIP (across from 25 and 28). Port Parking's discount lot is 4 to 5 miles out, so you'll pay for a taxi or rideshare both ways.

Arrive before 2 pm

The private shuttles stop in the early afternoon. Port Parking charges $25 if you check in after 2 pm, and Lighthouse runs its last shuttle at 2:30 pm.

Covered parking

A week in the Texas sun is hard on a car. For our sailing, a covered space cost $15 to $53 more, and an indoor garage also keeps the salt air off.

Hotel parking deals

Arrive the day before and some hotels will keep your car while you cruise. At Gaido's Seaside Inn it's free; the Tremont House charges $160 for up to 8 days. More options: cruise port hotels.

Look at the total before you pay

For a 7-night sailing, DCP shows $129.99 up front. At checkout it added a $7.89 service fee, an $11.37 port terminal access fee, the $8.05 City of Galveston fee and $12.04 sales tax, which came to $169.34, or 30% more. Port Parking, Patriot and EZ added the same $8.05 city fee plus 8.25% sales tax on the parking price. Lighthouse quotes totals.

The port has lots next to every terminal. From the ones beside a terminal you walk; the economy lots further out have a free shuttle.
