The best time to visit Galveston

For the beach, come from May to early June or in October: the water is warm without the worst of the summer heat. Birding, festivals and cheap rooms point to other months, and the month-by-month table has the weather, water and events for each.

The short answer

Galveston by season

Late spring gets the balance right. In May the water reaches 78 °F, highs stay in the mid-80s and there's less rain than in summer and fall. October is similar, but it's still hurricane season. Summer is hot and busy, and winter is mild but too cold to swim.

A beach vacation

Best months: June, July, August. Also good: May, September, October.

Warmest water June to August; fewer people in May and October

The water is warmest from June to August, when lifeguards are on duty and the trolley runs Wednesday to Sunday. Days are hot and humid and nights stay near 80 °F, so go to the beach in the morning and evening and stay indoors in the hottest hours. NOAA's heat index explains why it feels hotter than the thermometer reads.

For fewer people on the sand, pick a weekday in May or October, or late September away from festival weekends. September is still warm, but it's the rainiest month and the busiest part of hurricane season. An average doesn't guarantee a good day for swimming or a lifeguard in the tower. Lifeguards staff the towers through the beach season; call (409) 763-4769 for the day's coverage and check the flag.

Festivals

Best months: January, February, December.

Mardi Gras in late January and early February, Dickens in early December

Mardi Gras falls in late January and early February, Dickens on The Strand in early December. For both, book your hotel early.

Birding

Best months: April, May. Also good: December, January, February.

Spring migration mid-April to mid-May; sandhill cranes December to February

Spring migration runs from mid-April to mid-May, and the sandhill cranes are here from December to February.

Pier fishing

Any month works.

All year, with shorter pier hours in winter

The Galveston Fishing Pier on the Seawall is open 24 hours from mid-March to late November and 7 am to 11 pm in winter. Each species has its own seasons and limits, so read Texas Parks & Wildlife's current rules before planning a trip around one fish.

A quieter trip

Good months: April, May, September, October, November.

Weekdays outside summer, spring break, holidays and festival weekends

Come on a weekday, away from summer, spring break, holiday weekends and festivals such as Mardi Gras, the Lone Star Rally and Dickens. In winter, check what's open first. The trolleys run on Fridays and Saturdays until February 28, 2027 (see Galveston without a car); Schlitterbahn is closed, and the Pleasure Pier sets its hours a week at a time.

A cheaper trip

Good months: December, January, February.

Winter weeknights, apart from Mardi Gras and the holidays

Weeknights in winter are usually the cheapest, apart from Mardi Gras and the holidays, and in summer a weeknight costs much less than a Saturday. Our cheap hotels guide compares real prices for a Wednesday in January, a Wednesday in July and a Saturday in July.

June 1 to November 30

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30. The National Hurricane Center puts the peak around September 10, with most storms between mid-August and mid-October. For a summer or fall trip, have a backup plan.

  • Book a refundable rate, or read the cancellation policy before you pay
  • Follow the National Hurricane Center's outlook in the week before you leave
  • On a cruise, the cruise line decides on itinerary changes; leave time to get home if the port closes

September also gets the most rain, 6.7 inches on average.
