Cruising from Galveston

From IAH or Hobby to the Galveston cruise port

No public bus or train runs from Houston's airports to the cruise port, so you'll need a shuttle, your cruise line's coach, a private car, a taxi or a rideshare. Which one to book comes down to two things: how many of you are traveling and when your flight lands.

The short answer

Pick a ride by group size and landing time

If you can choose your airport, fly into Hobby. It's about 30 miles closer, which saves half an hour on the road. Plan your ride around the terminal arrival time in your cruise documents. The ship's departure time is later and won't help you.

Timing

Land early or fly in the day before

Sailing-day flights

Count back from the terminal arrival time in your cruise documents. By car it's about an hour from Hobby and 1½ hours from IAH. Shared shuttles are slower. Royal Galveston's vans leave only on the hour and reach the terminals two hours after leaving IAH, or an hour after Hobby. On top of that comes baggage claim, the walk to the meeting point and, if you fly in from abroad, immigration and customs.

The last rides of the day vary. Royal Galveston's shared vans leave IAH until 5 pm and Hobby until 6 pm, and Galveston Express runs from 5 am to 8 pm. Carnival sells its transfer only if you land by 11:30 am at IAH or by noon at Hobby. A morning flight leaves room for a delay.

The night before

Flying in the day before leaves far more room for a delayed flight. Spend the night in Galveston and sailing day needs only a short ride, or none. Several hotels near the cruise port run their own shuttle to the ship.

Getting back to the airport

Getting off the ship takes a while. Carnival sells its coaches back to IAH and Hobby only for flights at 1:30 pm or later. Royal Galveston's shared vans leave the port from 8:30 am to noon, and for a flight before 1 pm the company suggests a private transfer instead. Before you choose, look up your ship's disembarkation time and your airline's check-in deadline.

On the island

The Galveston Island Trolley has no stop at the port.

What it costs

One way to the ship, for two and for four

Shuttle prices are the companies' own fares; taxi and rideshare prices are estimates from the meter rates.
